While there is no singular global definition of organic production, the principal goal of organic production is to develop operations that are sustainable and harmonious with the environment. Animal welfare related requirements of organic certification vary across countries. Regardless of geography, organic farms, like conventional farms that provide outdoor access and housing built to accommodate the behavior and comfort of the animals, can deliver on animal welfare in ways that farms managing animals in strict confinement cannot. Yet, there is no simple relationship between animal welfare and the type of farming system. Hence there is no evidence that organic farms deliver inferior or superior animal welfare beyond that offered in the requisite provision of pasture and outdoor access, and the prohibition of strict confinement for most species. Organic farms are limited in their application of conventional medicines and therefore cannot afford lapses in management that contribute to disease or injury if good animal welfare is to be delivered.
