Corn Price Update May 1st 2012
National Organic Grain and Feedstuffs Report
Information provided by the USDA livestock and Grain Market News who have combined their reporting into one national report.
April 28, 2012
National organic grain and feedstuffs are trading higher with good demand. Offerings of corn and soybeans were light to moderate with very good demand. Feed grade barley was lower on a light test this period, with good demand reported but limited availability in geographic areas where demand is greatest. Feed grade wheat remains in good demand, as farmers are looking for many other sources of protein for livestock feed. Some farmers with inventories of corn and soybeans continue to hold out for higher prices.
Large square bales of supreme organic alfalfa hay this period were $365.00/ton in Idaho.
Some organic operations are still reportedly importing beans from Argentina as needed, along with actively seeking out alternative grains, as the higher prices make it difficult for organic livestock farmers to remain profitable.
Prices negotiated spot market, FOB the farm. Prices quoted $/bushel, except soybean meal ($/ton and FOB the mill) and roasted soybeans, $/ton. Hay reported FOB the stack or barn unless otherwise noted. Soybean oil, sunflowers, spelt, cents/lb.
